Wonka Magic Mushrooms
Conceived in 2023 as a limited-edition tie-in to the prequel film “Wonka,” the Wonka Mushroom Bar revives the brand’s legacy of edible whimsy while tapping into the booming functional-food trend. Product designers imagined what Willy Wonka might concoct after wandering through a chocolate river bordered by candy toadstools: a slab shaped like a cluster of miniature mushrooms, each one breakable from the ‘forest floor’ of the bar. To differentiate it from nostalgia-only releases, Nestlé’s R&D wing partnered with a plant-based start-up that specializes in gourmet mycelium extracts.

However, Flavor-wise, the bar begins with 55% Peruvian cacao, enough cocoa butter to keep the snap crisp, and organic coconut sugar for a toffee-like sweetness. Infused within the fat phase is a dual extract of roasted shiitake and mellow Lion’s Mane, delivering a subtle umami baseline that opens up the mid-palate like a sip of miso broth. A dusting of dehydrated raspberry powder painted onto the ‘caps’ provides bright acidity, while micro-crystals of Maldon salt punctuate the finish. The resulting profile oscillates among earthy, fruity, and savory notes, encouraging slow, exploratory tasting rather than mindless munching.

Beyond taste, the Wonka Mushroom Bar is marketed as a triple-threat novelty. First, it is fully vegan: oat milk powder replaces dairy, and sunflower lecithin stands in for soy, allowing a creamy melt without common allergens. Second, each twelve-gram mushroom segment contains 250 mg of adaptogenic Lion’s Mane, a dosage positioned to support cognitive focus—an on-trend flourish that turns candy into conversation piece. Third, the bar’s sculptural silhouette doubles as playful portion control: consumers can snap off individual ‘stems’ for 30-calorie bites. Packaging amplifies the fantasy with pop-up graphics and a QR code that unlocks an augmented-reality “fungal forest” game, nudging the product into the experiential space where Wonka has always thrived. Early sell-outs suggest Wonka magic still endures.
